Twice ten seconds was enough. Twice ten seconds that were so strange, so different from all the other videos that took place on November 13th. at the presentation of the One Minute Awards in Paradiso, that they could no longer be ignored.

In the 10-second movies category (intended for mobile phones): two black and white movies of a man with an elephant's hat on his head, who is being harassed by curly, black wisps. The name of the maker who just graduated from Gerrit Rietveld: Willehad Eilers. He won with the movie Beach and received the trophy with appropriate bold shyness. On to the Sign + gallery where the full ten-minute film Elefantos, from which Eilers cut his films, is being screened.
In ten minutes, Eilers mirrors the world of Elefantos, a boy in an elephant mask who has similar friends with whom it is pleasant to be. He is happy and also melancholy, and a little anxious at times.

The story is confused and thin, but that is also not Eiler's trump card. That is the design. The costumes, the subtitles that sometimes appear in cock's feet, then again in elegant letters. The finds in the sound, the rampant black lines - it's fear disguised as calligraphy. And to top it off, the gospel singer who is allowed to sing the film at the end like a Greek choir; Willehad Eilers has a baroque fantasy and gold in his fingers. See again, and again.




Twee keer tien seconden waren genoeg. Twee keer tien seconden die zo vreemd, zo anders waren dan alle andere video’s die 13 november j.l. op de uitreiking van de One Minute Awards in Paradiso voorbij kwamen, dat ze niet meer uit het hoofd te branden waren.

In de categorie 10-seconden-filmpjes (bedoeld voor mobieltjes): twee zwart-wit filmpjes van een man met olifantenmuts op het hoofd, die wordt lastiggevallen door krullerige, zwarte slierten. De naam van de net van de Gerrit Rietveld afgestudeerde maker: Willehad Eilers. Hij won met het filmpje Beach en nam de trofee met gepaste stoere schutterigheid in ontvangst. Op naar galerie Sign+ waar de volle tien-minuten film Elefantos draait, waaruit Eilers zijn films sneed.
In tien minuten spiegelt Eilers de wereld van Elefantos voor, een jongen met een olifantenmasker die gelijksoortige vrienden heeft waarmee het aangenaam toeven is. Hij is gelukkig en ook melancholiek, en af en toe een beetje angstig.

Het verhaaltje is warrig en dun, maar dat is ook niet Eilers troef. Dat is de vormgeving. De kostuums, de ondertitels die dan eens in hanepoten, dan weer in sierlijke letters verschijnen. De vondsten in het geluid, de woekerende zwarte lijnen – het is angst, vermomd als calligrafie. En als klapper de gospel-zangeres die als een Grieks koor aan het einde de film mag uitzingen; Willehad Eilers heeft een barokke fantasie en goud in de vingers. Nog eens zien, en nog eens.
